Five Ways to Explore Mexican Culture with the Kids

Vacation can mean so much more than just having fun. It’s also a rare opportunity to learn about the world around you first-hand. These experiences are especially important for children and opening their eyes to the different ways people live around the globe. If you’re staying at Sunscape Dorado Pacifico Ixtapa, why not take some time out of your stay to explore Mexican culture with the kids using these fun ideas? Chances are you will all end up learning something you didn’t know before you hopped on the plane!

  • Food: Explore Mexico by starting with one of the most distinguishing aspects of a culture—food! Take the opportunity while you’re at Sunscape Dorado Pacifico Ixtapa to get a taste of real Mexican food instead of Americanized Tex-Mex at Tamarindo, serving up authentic Mexican delicacies.

  • Excursion: Take a quick day-trip to the Mexican city of Zihuatenejo. Less touristy than its sister city Ixtapa, Zihuatenejo was a small fishing village up until the rapid growth of the area’s tourism industry in the 1970s. The city is known for its laid-back, beachy vibe and is a mere 10-minute drive from Sunscape Dorado.

  • Shop: While exploring Zihuatenejo or other neighboring areas, help kids poke around in the many shops and artisan craft stands for the perfect distinctly-Mexican souvenir. The bright colors and fabrics used in many crafts are beautiful and truly unique to Mexico.
  • Language: It’s never too early to start learning a new language; in fact, the younger a child is when they begin learning a language the more likely it is that it will stick with them through adulthood. Before your trip, find a kid-friendly Spanish dictionary and you can both learn the basics together. Many of the staff members at Sunscape Dorado are fluent in both English and Spanish, so encourage kids to practice their new vocabulary throughout their stay!
  • Currency: Make sure you take home some Mexican currency! Give kids a few pesos to keep for themselves or even hand out to friends once they get home as little mementos. One peso is worth less than 0.1% of the American dollar, making them inexpensive and long-lasting souvenirs. Together you can do some research on the figures present on the coins for a worthwhile learning opportunity.

The official Mexican currency is PESO and the smallest is cent.

To finish off your exploration of Mexican culture, encourage kids to put together a scrapbook of everything they learned over their vacation, featuring any interesting photos or mementos they put together along the way.  What are you waiting for? Book your culture-rich vacation to Mexico today!
