A very popular beach activity at Sunscape Resorts & Spas is beach volleyball! Our guests love hitting the sand and serving it up it hopes of beating their opponents. But when did beach volleyball begin? Today, we’re going to give you a brief history.
Beach volleyball is said to have begun in the 1920s in Santa Monica, California about 25 years after the indoor version of the game was invented on the East Coast of the United States in Massachusetts. Initially, the sport was played as a family fun activity, but its low cost soon made it spread around the world. By the 1930s, the game was being played in places such as Riga, Sofia and Prague.
During the Great Depression, the sport experienced quite a boost as the economy was suffering and families were looking for fun activities for relatively no cost. By the 1950s, competitions were being held in several cities in California. Shortly after, sponsors realized the popularity of beach volleyball and began to take advantage of it.
In the 1970s, the first pro beach volleyball tour was organized and by 1986, the International Volleyball Federation had recognized the sport. Finally, in 1996, beach volleyball became part of the Olympics.
Today, hundreds of thousands of people enjoy the sport worldwide either participating for competition or for pleasure and this includes many of our guests!
