The History of Beach Volleyball

A very popular beach activity at Sunscape Resorts & Spas is beach volleyball! Our guests love hitting the sand and serving it up it hopes of beating their opponents. But when did beach volleyball begin? Today, we’re going to give you a brief history.

Beach volleyball is said to have begun in the 1920s in Santa Monica, California about 25 years after the indoor version of the game was invented on the East Coast of the United States in Massachusetts. Initially, the sport was played as a family fun activity, but its low cost soon made it spread around the world. By the 1930s, the game was being played in places such as Riga, Sofia and Prague.

During the Great Depression, the sport experienced quite a boost as the economy was suffering and families were looking for fun activities for relatively no cost. By the 1950s, competitions were being held in several cities in California. Shortly after, sponsors realized the popularity of beach volleyball and began to take advantage of it.

In the 1970s, the first pro beach volleyball tour was organized and by 1986, the International Volleyball Federation had recognized the sport. Finally, in 1996, beach volleyball became part of the Olympics.

Today, hundreds of thousands of people enjoy the sport worldwide either participating for competition or for pleasure and this includes many of our guests!

Destination: Curaçao

With Sunscape Curaçao Resort, Spa & Casino becoming the first Unlimited-Fun® resort to enter the destination, we want to introduce you to the fun little island in the Southern Caribbean that will be home to the newest Sunscape Resort & Spa! Below are some of the best reasons to visit Curaçao.

Ideal Weather

With only 22 inches of rain fall a year, Curaçao is an ideal destination to visit year-round!

Undersea National Park

This 1,500-acre national marine park encompasses Curaçao’s underwater terrain from New Port to the island’s southeastern tip. With restrictions on fishing and other intrusions, the park contains Curaçao’s most pristine coral reef and marine environment, as well as numerous ship wrecks, some dating back almost 100 years. Not surprisingly, it is a wonderland of exploration for divers and snorkelers.

The Curaçao Sea Aquarium

The aquarium offers a combination of information, education and interaction. Throughout the day there are several tours and presentations where visitors can watch, touch, and learn about the animals.

Rich in History

The resort is situated in the capital city of Curaçao, Willemstad. This lively port city has a rich history and is one of six UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Caribbean.

We hope you come discover what makes Curaçao the perfect destination!

Protect Yourself from the Sun at Sunscape Resorts

Who doesn’t enjoy Unlimited-Fun® in the sun? We know we do at Suncape Resorts & Spas and in our opinion, there’s nothing better than sitting on a beach, drinking a margarita and soaking up some sun rays. However, too much sun exposure can be very damaging to the skin. So, when you’re laying out on “La Playa” at Sunscape Dorado Pacifico, keep these tips in mind:

Block UVA and UVB rays: UVA rays are the primary cause of long-term skin damage, while UVB rays directly burn your skin. Look for brands of sunscreen that protect from both types of radiation.

Reapply sunscreen: Wearing sunscreen at the beach is pretty much a given, but most people do not remember to reapply throughout the day. After you take a dip in the ocean, make sure you put on some more of that Hawaiian Tropic!

Wear a hat: If you’re not a fan of sunscreen, wearing a wide-brimmed hat can help shield your face and upper body from harmful UV rays.

Wear polarized sunglasses: A longtime favorite of boaters and fisherman alike, polarized lenses contain a special filter that blocks rays of intense reflected light, thereby reducing glare.

Limit your exposure: The peak hours of sun exposure occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. During this time, make sure you seek shade periodically and are wearing plenty of sunblock.
