The eastern coast of Mexico bordering the Caribbean Sea is home to several popular resort destinations, including Cancun, Riviera Maya and Cozumel. This region on the Yucatan Peninsula offers some of the best beaches in the country, championship-caliber golf courses and an incredible mix of ancient Mayan and traditional Mexican culture – it’s a place every traveler will want to experience.
The ancient Mayan culture can be found everywhere in this region. The language is still spoken and traditions are still practiced. Experience this for yourself by exploring famous ancient Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza – one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
Cenotes (meaning “sacred well” in Mayan) are natural underground swimming holes. There are thousands of cenotes in the Yucatan peninsula, but a great option is to experience the cenotes named after the four elements: Earth, Wind, Fire and Air.
The island of Cozumel is well-known for its fantastic dive sites. Directly offshore is the second largest coral reef system in the world – the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Some resorts on the island offer PADI-certified dive centers and packages right on site, including Sunscape Sabor Cozumel. You can even get married underwater!
Tulum – it’s a town, but also a breathtaking, oceanfront archaeological site. It is regarded as one of the most visually striking Mayan ruins because of the beautiful contrast of the Caribbean Sea and the ancient stone structures. The trendy, bohemian downtown is not to miss either with authentic and relaxed restaurants, bars and markets.
Built alongside the Xcaret Mayan ruins, this beachfront eco-archaeological park combines natural, historical and cultural attractions. Theme park guests can swim through a river winding through a replica of a Mayan village, swim with dolphins, find indigenous animals of the tropical region, watch shows at the theater and more.
Cancun and the surrounding area is considered one of the world’s top golf destinations. You won’t be far from a variety of courses with unique backdrops of the Caribbean Sea, jungle and lagoons. Guests staying at Sunscape Sabor can tee off at nearby Cozumel Country Club!
Mexico is rich in its historic roots, welcoming people and vibrant culture, and the region near Cozumel exudes a unique charm of its own. Experience the area’s most renowned and cherished annual events.
DAY OF THE DEAD
October 31 – November 2
The three-day celebration celebrates, honors and remembers those who have passed. Decorations and traditional food are a colorful mix of sugar skulls, marigolds (the flowers of the dead), and muertos (the bread of the dead). Visitors can have an authentic experience at the Festival of Life and Death at Xcaret.
November 26, 2017
This annual athletic competition starts with a swim in the protected waters of the Cozumel National Park, a bike course along the coastline of the island, and a run lined with supporters, music and bands – finishing at the city hall square in San Miguel de Cozumel.
RIVIERA MAYA JAZZ FESTIVAL
November 30 – December 2, 2017
Since 2003, the annual three-night Riviera Maya Jazz Festival has taken over Playa del Carmen’s moonlit beaches with impressive lineups of local and international musicians, becoming one of the largest and most anticipated events in the region. Drawing jazz buffs and music lovers from all over the world, the festival’s live performances are raved about all year long.
SUMMER SOLSTICE & AUTUMN EQUINOX
June 21, 2018 & September 22, 2018
On the spring and autumn equinoxes, people visit the El Castillo pyramid at Chichen Itza. Built for a Mayan serpent deity, in the late afternoon, shadows evoke an image of a serpent crawling down the stairs of the pyramid.
